No subtitles posted, yet LOTS of feedback

I've noticed lately that many people who have NOT posted/worked on ANY subtitles are rather vocal in their comments about certain details of the subtitles. I'm pretty sure that if you were to delve into the process (Yes, there is a process for making subtitle files), you would learn to appreciate those who don't just copy/paste sub files from other sites but actually create them, or as in my case, edit them for a particular audience. Just correcting grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and correcting idioms in the file can take a couple of hours. The line-by-line can take days on a two-hour movie. (JAV) Just take a look at any .srt file with notebook, or whatever editor you have on Apple Products. There's some serious parameters in there for the time-stamps. Luckily, Subtitle Editor makes synching each and every line and filling in missing dialogue much easier, but it is still a long, drawn-out, tedious process. Hence the reason it can take days. So lighten up. I didn't care for the quality of subtitles, and about a year ago I decided to really do something about it. I learned how to edit the damned things, and I learned to really respect the people who create the damned things. Yes, we don't always get it right, but there is a very BIG difference between complaints and constructive criticism. RK

Well, I must admit, he was uppermost in my mind, but there are others who aren't as, um, I want to say crude, as he was. Instead of complaining about, oh, the synch being off, why not say, "These don't sync up with my copy of the video. How can I fix it?" Ads and other things are usually trimmed off of a video at the beginning. My editor can slice at 30fps. Many can not, some at 60fps. Couple frames off and the sync goes 'Bye-Bye!'. Maybe I'll start an FAQ thread for tips on editing subtitle files. That may cut down on the chatter. RK

That is often an issue I have found, and no real way around it. I started sharing subtitles I created about two years ago, and had a lot of people either complain that they were not as they liked, or begging me to subtitle a specific video. And they did not seem to get I was doing this for free, as a hobby. Even telling them how to do it themselves did no good, they wanted me to produce perfect subtitles at their whim for free. And it really is not hard to do, especially with the tools available. It is just very time consuming.
