For about a year, I was encoding the video and SRT files into MKV files with MKVToolNix. Then stupidly, deleting the original video and SRT file. Is there a way to extract the SRT back out of an MKV file?

+1 for MKVextract. You can also do it with ffmpeg (command line tool), but a little bit more complex. I can provide some examples if you need.

Thank you both, worked like a charm. Expect a bunch more soon, as I had dozens tied up inside MKV files I did in the last year, and now I can share them with everybody here. Especially those BKD ones, some really liked those. I guess some really do love their mothers. :P

create a directory: Finished SRTs and copy them all to it when you've finished. I have 2 externals with all my original videos and finished srt's (And projects to do... hundreds of projects to do...) Disaster Recovery Routines can save you a lot of grief in the future.
