- Portrait of a controlling manipulator, lacks surprise
I was greatly impressed with indie Adult Cinema director Missa X's vignette compilation titled "Jane" (after a character the director portrayed), but this 3-hour feature about an indie pornographer is a tad disappointing.
That's because Missa's self-reflexive screenplay offers too predictable a view of a female porn director who is transparently (as overacted by lead Cadence Lux) a rotten person, manipulating and exploiting the women she pretends to love.
Her first victim is her wife, well-played by Vera King, who has had a baby with Cadence, using Lux's egg and donated sperm. The couple is at a crossroads as the movie begins, with Vera unhappy with Cadence's chosen profession as a pornographer working out of their home, set in Wisconsin (with some atmospheric backdrops differing from the usual L.A. shoots). She also rightly suspects that Cadence is having affairs with her acting talent (in strictly Sapphic porn).
Her suspicions are soon confirmed, when Cadence is easily seduced by a German import actress (beautiful Anny Aurora), caught in the act by Vera. It's splitsville, and no chance of mom Vera getting any custody to their infant son, as meanie Lux forcefully informs her.
A year later Anny is living with Cadence after the divorce and has given Lux all her savings anent the couple's forthcoming nuptials. But ever so predictable, she is the next victim, dropped like a hot potato when Lux directs another hot blonde, Emma Starletto, and makes love to her too. Feature ends on a most amoral note.
Though employing a style all her own, Missa X reminds me of an American equivalent to Brit Porn pioneer Anna Span, who also made a big splash going it alone and avoiding the cliches of mainstream, largely gonzo porn content. Problem with the long-form feature is that credibility is sacrificed in favor of the very lengthy XXX scenes and hyper-dramatic eruptions that don't ring true. Cadence's tons of experience lately working for Stills & Mills in performing over-the-top characters for their Lesbian web site vignettes leads to a performance here that is overly theatrical and not believable, especially as the viewer immediately sees through her act while her co-stars are presented as completely gullible.
